Despite historically not being at the forefront of technological innovation, the construction industry has made notable strides in recent years.
These advancements have led to increased efficiency for construction companies, from improved safety training and accident prevention measures to the use of augmented reality for building assistance.
Furthermore, technology has helped mitigate the effects of labor shortages and improve overall operational efficiency.
To gain further insight on this topic, we interacted with Larry Clay, an expert in the construction industry.
Who Did We Interview?
As founder and president of a renowned construction company, Larry oversees all aspects of the business and is a constant motivator for his team.
Larry was the National President of the Canadian Home Builders Association 2021/22.
For his clients, he is creative, authoritative, and a reassuring presence throughout the building process. His expertise and commitment to premium customer care have earned his company top awards in customer service.
Larry is an industry leader serving on local, provincial, and national home-building boards and has been a featured speaker from coast to coast. He is passionate about building healthy, comfortable, efficient, and durable homes.
It depends on your location and niche. I think spec builders are nervous with the talk of a recession.
Custom builders and renovators are busy depending on our area but know that other parts of Canada/US are experiencing a challenging market. Clay Construction will be busy as we have many homes in the pipeline.
We are online and offer a portal for clients on BuilderTrend. They have access to quotes, invoices, budgets, schedules, and daily logs.
QR codes have been implemented on-site for trades to access plans, interior design drawings, structural, wall/ceiling photos before drywall, etc. I see a slow transition to digital in our industry.
Over the next 10 years, we need to double our current production to build 3.5 million homes in Canada. We don’t have the people to do this. We will need to start building more efficiently, and this may require offsite construction, including prefab and panelized homes.
The industry has been focused on operational carbon, but the next focus will be embodied carbon, and we need to do this affordably.
We need also to be focused on retrofitting existing homes because 75 percent of the building stock in 2030 will be composed of buildings already standing today.
Prefab and panelized construction mentioned above.
We are continuing to build more efficiently.
1. Different materials. Wall assemblies that will dry and homes will be more airtight, making an HRV/ERV necessary for every home.
2. Better windows.
3. Move towards more insulation.
4. Move towards using materials with less embodied carbon.
I have never done anything in 4 words or less. Essential, polarizing, innovative, and prosperous.
Educate, innovate, and empower.
